Schuster Maschinenbau turns the lathe on its axis. By standing the spindle vertically, the same spindle that cuts your part also loads it, so automation is built in rather than bolted on. The result is a smaller footprint, fewer setups and faster cycles.
Background Knowledge
Most lathes lay their spindle on its side. Schuster stands it up, and everything else on the machine follows from that.
On a vertical pick-up lathe the main spindle machines the part and handles loading and unloading. Automation is intrinsic, not an add-on cell.
Turning, drilling, milling and grinding consolidate into a single process, which is where the cycle-time saving comes from.
The vertical axis allows a far more compact machine. Workpiece supply and chip removal can be arranged left, right, front or rear to fit the space you have.
Downward chip disposal keeps the machine running continuously instead of stopping for chip nests.
Product Lines
Schuster builds on one continually expanding modular system for the F, V and P system platforms and the new NXT series, a new development based on the P series. The NXT, F and V series are detailed below.
Schuster's entry into automated vertical turning, developed in 2020. Chucked parts up to 250 mm, Siemens SINUMERIK ONE or FANUC 0i control, fully integrated pick-up automation, and a patented spindle clamp that suppresses micro-vibration at the spindle nose. Schuster presents the NXT as a family of three, with larger models for parts up to 350 mm and 600 mm in diameter. All NXT models are also available as DUO double-spindle cells.
The freely configurable platform for shaft and flange components and end machining. Runs standalone or inside a connected line, and can be built into a combination cell that turns, mills, grinds and gear-cuts.
The vertical structure makes the best use of your production area. Its vertical double spindle units suit twin processing and double-sided machining. Loading and unloading times are lower than conventional pick-up solutions, thanks to the standardized handling system between the two work areas.
Process Methods
Schuster's process story is a genuine differentiator: operations that normally mean separate machines run inside one cell.
Part clamped centrally, machined at both ends and both faces at once. Shafts 130-800 mm long, 15-100 mm dia.
The core process on a single machine.
Secondary operations brought inside the cell instead of a second machine.
Shuttle-box systems for fully unmanned shifts, with KUKA robot loading and unloading.
In-process quality monitoring and controlled part discharge.
Industry Applications
Automotive, drive technology, medical technology and renewable energy - industries where several precision operations have to happen on the same part.
High-volume machining of symmetric and shaft components. Schuster names rotor-shaft production for e-mobility on its own F-series product page.
Shafts, gears and drivetrain components where several operations would otherwise mean several machines.
Small precision components at tight tolerance, named as a served industry on Schuster's F-series page.
Named by Schuster as a served industry on its solutions page.
Why Choose Us
Six reasons manufacturers standardize on Schuster for vertical turning.
The pick-up spindle loads the part it machines. No separate loader to buy, integrate or maintain.
Polymer concrete (mineral cast) rather than grey iron: better damping, low thermal conductivity, coolant resistance, and up to 30% longer tool life.
A 300 Nm clamping force applied at the spindle nose, close to the component, suppresses micro-vibration where it starts and allows harder off-centre drilling and milling.
Schuster states its machines need no external heat compensation.
NXT, F and V configure around your part, floor space, batch size and operating hours.
100% Made in Germany, backed by up to a 36-month warranty.
